About The Show

21 CHUMP STREET by Lin-Manuel Miranda (IN THE HEIGHTS, HAMILTON) is a new 14-minute musical based on a true story as reported in the series 'This American Life'.

21 CHUMP STREET is a cautionary tale of a high school honors student who falls for a cute transfer girl. He goes to great lengths to oblige her request for marijuana in the hopes of winning her affection -- only to find out his crush is actually an undercover cop planted in the school to find drug dealers.

21 CHUMP STREET discusses the ramifications of peer pressure, conformity and drug use in our schools with a message that will stay with teenagers long after they leave the theater. Perfect for donor evenings, galas, special events and student/community outreach programs.

Character Descriptions

LEADING PLAYER- The ultimate 'ring leader.' Masterfully charming and manipulative, the Leading Player is a chameleon of sorts. Guides Pippin through his own story and tries to intervene at the end. Excellent dancer. Obsessed with putting on a great show for the audience.

  • Gender: Either
  • Age: Flexible
  • Vocal range top: Ab4
  • Vocal range bottom: Db3
  • Tenor/Alto Belter

PIPPIN- Our story's young and confused protagonist. The young son of fabled Emperor Charlemagne and heir to the throne, Pippin is bright, educated and restless.  He is longing to find his purpose in life/something completely fulfilling.  Naive, innocent, and discontent.  Eventually finds love, and meaning in life.

  • Gender: Male
  • Age: 18 to 25
  • Vocal range top: Ab4
  • Vocal range bottom: G2
  • Tenor

CHARLES/CHARLEMAGNE- Pippin’s demanding and less-than-attentive father. As the King of the Holy Roman Empire, Charlemagne is more comfortable wielding a sword than breaking bread. He wears his years with great pride.  He indulges his wife Fastrada’s extravagance, but isn’t too fond of their son, Lewis.

  • Gender: Male
  • Age: 50 to 60
  • Vocal range top: E4
  • Vocal range bottom: G2
  • Baritone/Bass

BERTHE- Pippin’s saucy grandmother (and Charlemagne’s mother). She is still attractive and enjoys the simple pleasures of the body and the senses.  A brassy broad full of wisdom, grace, and sass. When Pippin seeks her advice, she tries to help Pippin and encourages him to enjoy his youth and live his life to the fullest.

  • Age: 67 to 67
  • Vocal range top: C5
  • Vocal range bottom: E3
  • Mezzo Belter

  • Gender: Female
  • Age: 35 to 45
  • Vocal range top: F5
  • Vocal range bottom: A3
  • Alto Belter

CATHERINE- A widow and mother with a young son and a large estate. She is a beautiful and a hopeless romantic, who possesses graceful elegance. Encounters Pippin at his lowest point, takes him in, and eventually falls in love with him.

  • Gender: Female
  • Age: 25 to 30
  • Vocal range top: Db5
  • Vocal range bottom: F#3
  • Mezzo

LEWIS- Pippin's not-too-bright half-brother, and, after Pippin, heir to the throne, Lewis is doted upon by his mother, Fastrada, as she attempts to promote his chances of becoming principal heir. Not at all like Pippin, Lewis loves weight lifting, wrestling, showing off, and, most of all, Lewis.

  • Age:  20 to 25
  • Spoken, May sing with players

THEO- A small loveable boy, he is Catherine's son and becomes Pippin's friend.

  • Gender:  Male
  • Age:  8-12
  • Tenor
  • Appears in Act II only
  • Sings Prayer For A Duck with Pippin and Catherine
  • Closes the show with a solo, singing Corner Of The Sky (Reprise)

Pippin Synopsis

With an infectiously unforgettable score from four-time Grammy winner, three-time Oscar winner and musical theatre giant, Stephen Schwartz, Pippin is the story of one young man's journey to be extraordinary. Winner of four 2013 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival, this updated circus-inspired version of Pippin continues to captivate and appeal to the young at heart throughout the world.

Heir to the Frankish throne, the young prince Pippin is in search of the secret to true happiness and fulfillment. He seeks it in the glories of the battlefield, the temptations of the flesh and the intrigues of political power (after disposing of his father, King Charlemagne the Great). In the end, though, Pippin finds that happiness lies not in extraordinary endeavors, but rather in the unextraordinary moments that happen every day.

Audition Requirements

This is a Teen production.,  You must be at least 13 and no older than 19 by the opening of the show (July 13, 2018)

Dance – Logan, the Choreographer will teach a brief audition dance in the hour before the auditions start, and will post a video of the dance after info night for anyone who wants to start practicing early, or has to send in a video submission. Please dress for a dance audition, you should also consider bringing knee pads if available.

Video audition is here

Music – Auditioners are expected to prepare 16 bars of two separate songs (a total of 32 bars). We ask that one song be from a musical that debuted before 1990 (Think classics like How to Succeed, Gypsy, Into the Woods, West Side Story, Funny Girl, Carousel, etc.) and the other song be from a show that debuted after 1990 (Think modern shows like Rent, Avenue Q, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Waitress, Dear Evan Hansen, etc.). Damn Yankees is a classic show, so we want to see how your voice sounds in both a traditional and more modern Broadway setting. Please refrain from singing songs from Damn Yankees. Please bring sheet music for accompanist , or you can bring an audio clip to sing to, if you bring your own audio, we request that it be pre-cut to just the sections of music that you will be singing, so we don’t waste time, searching through a YouTube video for the correct section of music.

Acting – Auditioners are expected to prepare around a minute of a comedic monologue of their choosing. If necessary it can be read, but memorized is preferred.
