“SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN”

IN THE SPOTLIGHT SERIES

MACKENZIE OZAROFF

ENSEMBLE

Actorsingers is pleased to present Windham’s own Mackenzie Ozaroff in our IN THE SPOTLIGHT Series.  She will be performing as an Ensemble member in SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN.

Mackenzie read about the auditions for SITR on the Actorsinger website and thought “Why not? She loves the feeling of the show, the lights, the costumes, the dancing – really everything – it gives her a rush!  She says it’s been a little tricky being one of the younger people as well as being new to Actorsingers.  But everyone has been so helpful and absolutely wonderful!

Mackenzie got her inspiration to perform from a friend of hers.  She had gone to see her in a show when she was only ten, and decided to give it a try. Eight years later, she’s still at it.

When not in a show, she enjoys playing guitar and singing. She also does a lot with photography. She works with third graders during school hours, and loves playing with her foster siblings.

When we asked Mackenzie what she likes best about community theatre, she responded,  “I like the realness of the people I work with. I like that it feels like a family versus a job.”  In this show, she feels the biggest challenge is having actual rain, but she’s excited for that. It’s also the first time she has performed in an adult show.

What do you get from theater that you don’t get from anything else you do? She says it’s the whole thing. It’s so funny, and the dancing is fantastic. Shout-out to Colin and Marc for holding up during Moses Supposes, Fit as a Fiddle, and Make ‘Em Laugh.

Welcome to Actorsingers, Mackenzie!  We hope this is the first of many shows you do with us!!

In The Spotlight - Michelle Long (2017)

Stage Crew - SINGIN' IN THE RAIN

“SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN”

IN THE SPOTLIGHT SERIES

MICHELLE LONG

STAGE CREW

We are pleased to present Michelle Long IN THE SPOTLIGHT.

Michelle will be joining us as a stage crew member for SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN, along with her partner, Issac Mishkit.  (Isaac has also done a lot of our cast photography for this production.)

Michelle is originally from Detroit, MI and currently lives in Manchester.  She has always wanted to be on the stage but while in college she discovered she loves being behind the scenes even more.  Her college professor/Mentor Michael encouraged her to pursue her love of theatre lighting and it led to her professional career as a Light Board Programmer in Boston.

Michelle chose to be a part of the crew for our show to work with Cheryl Stocks (stage manager) and Isaac.  Isaac was in the show INTO THE WOODS and Cheryl was that show’s stage manager as well. She had also worked on this show at the North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly MA and is excited to “make it rain” again.

Michelle finds so many pieces of theatre to be interesting: the number of costumes and props, the number of hours creating the sets, lighting effects, new technology, and the months of preparing, designing, learning sometimes difficult music, etc..

After leaving her career in professional technical theatre, Michelle now works at FIRST where her job involves getting kids around the world inspired to pursue science and technology careers through afterschool robotics-based Teams and events.

Michelle states that “theater has been a part of my life since I was 10 years old and was in a Community Theater production of Peter Pan, and I haven't been able to let go since. The best part of working in community theatre is that it’s fun to have people from all walks of life in one place working together to do something they love.”

In The Spotlight - Pam Thornhill (2017)

Wardrobe Mistress/Ensemble - SINGIN IN THE RAIN
Posted by Evelynn Decker Saturday, May 6, 2017 12:47:00 PM Categories: In the Spotlight Main Stage

“SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN’

IN THE SPOTLIGHT SERIES

PAMELA THORNHILL

APPEARING AS WARDROBE MISTRESS/ENSEMBLE

Nashua native, Pamela Thornhill auditioned for “Singin’ in the Rain” because she loves the show and the directing and producing team – and she wanted to Tap!!  She was happy and excited when she found out she was cast in this all-time favorite theatre classic.

Pam appears in various parts throughout the show, but she will be seen as the Wardrobe Mistress to Miss Lina Lamont.  She says she got a lot of her inspiration from Actorsingers’ own wardrobe specialists, the late Penny Tamulonis and Raelene Liljeberg, then mixed in her own flair.  As for the other character she portrays, she says she is these things in real life – a fan, a theatre patron, a townsperson, etc.

Pam says the most challenging part of bringing her role to life is the need to make it appear real and effortless.  That comes with hours and hours of rehearsal!!   Pam got her theatrical inspiration from a teacher she had when she was 11 years old and from her wonderful and talented mom, whose love of music, theatre and culture inspires her to this day.

When not involved in theatre, Pam works for a small company in marketing and inside sales (which she loves!) and many other interests that keep her busy and enjoying life.

When Pam was asked what she likes best about being involved in community theatre, her response was:  “Where do I begin? I have met some of the most wonderful, bright, caring, loving, fun and talented people, who all support one another and want to bring joy to those in the community and to one another.  I learn something new with each show I am part of.”

Pam feels theatre gives you a profound sense of fulfillment and joy in being able to share the gifts of singing, acting and dancing with fellow theater people and most importantly, those who attend theater. It gives you a chance make someone smile and be positive every day. “ It is one of my passions and I am blessed that I am able to be part of it.”

In The Spotlight - Don Smith-Weiss (2017)

R.F. Simpson - SINGIN IN THE RAIN

“SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN’

IN THE SPOTLIGHT SERIES

DON SMITH-WEISS

APPEARING AS R.F. SIMPSON, PRODUCER OF MONUMENTAL STUDIOS

We are pleased to present Nashua native, Don Smith-Weiss in our In the Spotlight Series!

When asked “Why did you audition for this show?” Don replied he was looking to do another show and someone suggested he’d be good in the part of the movie producer (they were absolutely right!)  Don has connected with his character by recalling people he has worked for who are in-charge and pushy, so he used that to develop his character.

Don says one of the many personal challenges he has faced for this show was deciding to shave off his goatee and reduce his moustache to a 1930’s-style pencil moustache.  He hasn’t shaved his moustache in about 40 years…What some folks won’t do for their art!!

Don says he got his earliest inspiration to perform when he appeared in his second-grade production of “Chicken Little,” and felt he could have done a better job playing some of the lead roles than the kids who got them! He also auditioned for a play when he was in high school.

His favorite thing about being involved in community theatre is the collaboration.  “You work with the other actors to make everyone’s performance better, and sets, costumes, props, lighting – all the technical parts - are coordinated to enhance the actors’ work.”

When Don isn’t doing theatre, he is a kitchen designer and also enjoys gardening, playing several instruments, writing songs, and performing in public on occasion.

When asked what Don gets from theatre that you don’t get from anything else you do…Don replied, "It's the collaborative experience.  The camaraderie that comes from shaping a production with other like-minded people is incredible!  If you love what you’re doing, the audience will see it and feel it.  Talk about sharing joy!”

In The Spotlight - Lara Hyde (2017)

Choreographer - SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN
Posted by Evelynn Decker Wednesday, April 19, 2017 11:25:00 AM Categories: In the Spotlight

Lara is from Calgary, Alberta, Canada.  We first met her and husband Robbie last year when they performed in Spamalot.  Here’s what she has to say about Actorsingers and her role as choreographer in Singin’ in the Rain.

What compelled you to want to work on this particular show? Listening to music from this show makes me spontaneously smile and drop whatever I'm doing to start dancing.

What do you get from theater that you don’t get from anything else you do? Theater gives me the most exhilarating adrenaline rush. While choreographing the production, I have loved the feeling of my brain being ripe with ideas, and then weaving these ideas together into a creative vision that will make both the performers and the audience feel something. For this production in particular, I'm usually aiming for giddy happiness explosions.

What was the most challenging part of bringing your craft to life for this show? Making sure that performers don't accidentally poke each other’s eyes out with their umbrellas or fall into the orchestra pit - it gets jam-packed when there are 35 people onstage!

What are the 2-3 most interesting/noteworthy factoids about this production as it relates to your craft? The diversity of dance styles in this show is noteworthy, including tap, Charleston, smooth jazz, ballroom, acrobatics and slapstick physical comedy. As a choreographer, I've enjoyed researching 1920s-style movement through many hours of YouTube videos and creating movement that reflects these dynamics. Ever since I signed onto the show in September, I've been having these ideas pop into my head at all times of the day; while cooking eggs, drinking a cup of coffee, walking down the hall at work and even in the shower. In the process I've learned some important lessons, like the fact that my home ceilings are too low to dance inside with an umbrella and that it is very dangerous to tap dance in flip flops while holding a cup of coffee.

Who or what inspired you to be involved in theater? My mom inspired me to dance when I was a little girl. She was a dancer, too, so she was pretty thrilled when I really took to dance. Growing up I was primarily a ballerina, and also trained in jazz, tap and modern. Most recently, I danced with Urbanity, a contemporary dance company in Boston. Although I've always loved musicals, I wasn't involved in any musical theater myself until last year when I performed with the Actorsingers in Spamalot and choreographed Damn Yankees at a local high school. I'm embracing musical theater in this new chapter of my life and thoroughly enjoying the challenge - my goodness, it is difficult to sing and dance at the same time!

What do you like best about being involved in Community Theater? The COMMUNITY. When my husband and I moved to New Hampshire from Boston we didn't know anyone in the area. This inspired me to start "Operation Make Friends in NH," and together we auditioned for Actorsingers. I can say that our operation was immensely successful. I love how the Actorsingers community is multi-generational and inspires people to contribute their many talents create to create shows that are so much more than the sum of their parts.

What do you do for fun and work when you aren’t working in the theater? I teach Anatomy and Physiology and Nutrition courses at Manchester Community College. Earlier this year, my husband Robbie and I launched a nutrition YouTube channel called Nourishable. Robbie is passionate about the audio and visual production to create a platform for me to share my expertise gained from my PhD in nutrition. Our goal is to create a source for accurate nutrition information in bite-size pieces to empower everyone to lead healthy lifestyles. Check it out at nourishable.tv. I also enjoy running marathons and going on cross-continent adventures with Robbie and our giant poodle in our trailer.

Is there anything else about this production that you feel is interesting? This is my first time choreographing for Actorsingers and I'm having a blast!
