Directors Note
When I was asked to take on "Fame", I was hesitant
at first. The show never made it to Broadway, it has
never received the greatest of reviews, and let's
fact it... "Fame" will not go down in history as one
of the "American Classics". Yet the challenge of
taking a "not-so-great" piece of work and making it
into something both the audience and cast would
love... was a very intriguing one. "Fame" the musical
is not "Fame" the movie, nor is it "Fame" the
television show, & other movies such as "Footloose", &
"Flashdance", & more contemporary films such
as "Camp", and "Center Stage". It is a story set a
quarter century after "Fame" the movie premiered in
theatres, set in the "fame school", New York City's
"High School of Performing Arts". The issues dealt
with in this show are timeless, regardless of the
"glamorous profession" these teens are working
towards; love, loss, sexuality, fear, relationships,
hopes and dreams, the crushing of those hopes and
dreams, parents, school, drugs and alcohol, and the
general turmoil and angst of just existing as
a teenager. The story you are about to live for the
next 2 hours is one we can all relate too... The
constant struggle for "fame-at-any-cost" is not just
the ethos of performing artists... in today's society
where every situation becomes a reality television
show... aren't we all just looking for our 15 minutes
of fame?
