The Play by Play Preview Bringing you theatre and music news of interest to young people Volume II. Issue Number 10, November 9, 2000 The Acting Loft presents -- Bye, Bye Birdie Come say "Hello! Hello!" to Bye, Bye Birdie at the Acting Loft in Manchester, opening this weekend for a two-weekend run. Performances are Fridays 11/10 and 11/17 at 7:30, Saturdays 11/11 and 11/18 at 3:00 PM and again at 7:30, and Sundays 11/12 and 11/19 at 4:00 PM, at the New Hampshire Institute of Art, 148 Concord Street in Manchester, NH. Tickets are $10, $9.00 for members of the NHIA. Call the box office at (603) 623-0313, extension 547 for reservations or more information. Bye, Bye Birdie is a captivating musical. The high-flying score soars with favorites including Put On A Happy Face, Kids, One Last Kiss, and One Boy. Done with the fondest affection, this show is a satire, telling the story of a rock and roll singer who is about to be inducted into the army. Singer Conrad Birdie is an Elvis Presley type, with a pompadour and thick sideburns. Conrad will bid a typical American teen-age girl goodbye with an all-American kiss. Kim MacAfee, a wide-eyed enthusiastic teenager from Sweet Apple, Ohio wins the honor. The arrival of Birdie in Sweet Apple causes people of many ages to swoon, and causes a few to turn sour. The MacAfee household is completely upset by the visiting celebrity. Birdie will give his last kiss to Kim on the Ed Sullivan show. Kim's father, lamenting the whole uproar, tries to break into the act and behaves like a ham on the TV show. Christopher Courage and Susan Horne, Co-Artistic Directors for the Acting Loft, assembled a talented cast for the musical. Sally Landis of Hollis completes the artistic staff trio as musical director. The cast includes these young people from many towns in NH and MA: Jon Weinstein, Kate Stewart, Sarah Stein, Andrew Siegel, Elizabeth Rousseau, Jason Reed, Catie Preczewski, Brian Minsky, Carrie Mahon, Alexi Jenis, Jim Ierardi, Ashley Hughes, Stefanie Howell, Garett Hawe, Ryan Gibeau, Megham Getchell, Kristen Gehling, Heather Fay, Jessica Edwards, Nick Edes, Elizabeth Dirth, Jenn Dalrymple, Noelle Conomacos, Peter Chambers, Tom Caron, Hannah Blanchette, Amanda Beale, Gina Alibrio, and Arsha Alexander. Music, theatre groups, and other performances will be available at specified venues. Check upcoming issues of the (Nashua) Telegraph for complete schedule information. 3.3 Consider a program ad in your favorite playbill One way to show your support for the arts is to sponsor a program ad, big or small, in your favorite playbill. This is good business as well, since the several thousands who attend and perform in theatre and concerts patronize the advertisers. Some production companies also offer “applause lines.” For a minimal cost you can send a personal greeting to your friends in the cast and crew. Some companies run an ad for a single show. Others will run your ad for an entire theatre season, and can tell you the numbers in their audiences for the previous season. 4.
