P L A Y B Y P L A Y P R E V I E W Bringing you theatre and music news of interest to young people Volume II. Issue Number 11, November 29, 2000 Scroll down for the "In This Issue" section Moms and Daughters -- A View of the Curtain from Every Angle There is a giant sleigh full of wonderful stories about families working together in music and theatre -- more than enough for a feature article in a local magazine or newspaper! Send us your vignettes, and the PPP will wrap them up and submit to southern NH venues for possible publication. Any stories that include family members and friends are welcome. Being an audience member at recent events sparked the idea for this project. There are a million wonderful local stories out there. Here are just a few of them. You can read more about several of these events still to come, elsewhere in this newsletter. (PPP) The Wilson women are well known for their wizardry creating sets, but right now daughters Andrea, Sarah, and Heather are helping their Mom organize a music workshop and concert for students in grades 4 through 12 in Nashua. That is, when Anne is not driving Andrea and Sarah to and from rehearsals for It's A Wonderful Life at Elm Street Junior High. * Lynn MacDonald (Widow Corney) and Cheri Birch (Nancy) worked on both sides of the curtain in MSM's recent production of Oliver, costuming the cast and caring for all the orphans and thieves, including daughters Miranda MacDonald and Rachel Birch. * Over at Actorsingers, Amy Friedman recently produced a hugely successful Fiddler on the Roof, in which daughter Lauren Friedman played one of Tevye's daughters. * Kathy Lovering is currently organizing auditions for the Actorsingers production of On the Town. Kathy got her start in music with the Nashua High School band, and her daughters are following in this family tradition. Eventually Kathy left the pit to perform on-stage with the Actorsingers. Now her favorite roles are behind the scenes. The lovely Loverings sang with the Actorsingers during the Holiday Stroll in Nashua. * Another mother and daughter duo on the Holiday Stroll with Actorsingers was the musical team of Redman and Redman. Kathy selected the music and spearheaded the alto section. Daughter Becca Redman performed double duty on the Stroll; singing with Mom, and playing accompaniment for the Elm Street Beat show choir. Who conducted "The Beat?" None other than Julie Oliver-Babb, whose daughter Laura Babb performed with the group. * Julie was fresh from being musical director for Peacock Players' production of Madeline, in which daughter Julianna Babb portrayed the young Yvette. * Elizabeth Ierardi arrived early opening night to work her magic with make-up and hair for the young people in The Adventures of Dr. Dolittle. Daughter Katie Ierardi came to support her family, and was quickly enlisted to "woman" the spotlight for opening night. Another Katie, a Preston this time, arrived early to apply the exquisite make-up required for her role of Polynesia. Katie's Mom Judy Preston filled many backstage roles, including costuming, ticket sales, and supporting the lighting crew. * Ginger Borase is currently organizing auditions for Fiddler on the Roof, which she is directing. Daughters Sarina and Megan are helping Mom with many tasks on this project, although Sarina is sometimes busy performing with Judy Pancoast and the KidPop! Crew. * Judy Pancoast's daughters Emma and Louisa have been performing with Mom for years, as back-up singers, cheerleaders, and even as a ladybug or an alien when called upon. At the Acting Loft in Manchester, April Fay ran a first-rate concession stand for Bye Bye Birdie where daughter Heather was in the cast, and while daughter Alexa was in rehearsal for Annie Warbucks. * Backstage at the Acting Loft you'll spot Leslee Stewart, supporting the entire cast which frequently includes her diva daughter Katelyn. * Beth Rousseau was hairdresser to the stars while daughter Elizabeth perfected her songs and dances. * Terri Pattee has been costuming Acting Loft shows for years, and often the audience is treated to daughter Sarah's sparkling soprano. * Also in Manchester, Betty Thomson recently directed The Boyfriend for the New Thalian Players. When a lead performer was unavailable due to career demands, Betty's daughter Beth Fenske stepped in to the role of Mazie, proving to all that "hoofer" genes are inherited. * And over at Majestic, JoAnn Duhamel created many costumes for The Sound of Music, in which daughter Allison played the role of Louisa. JoAnn Duhamel and Lynn Feinberg drove their daughters and many cast members to rehearsals and productions of Mother Goose and other Majestic shows this past season, and typically were there to usher and strike set as well. Sometimes Lynn would be rehearsing in one room, while daughters Jamie and Abby were on the road or running workshops in another. Genni Kurtzman and her daughter Lori performed in La Traviata with the Operafest of NH. Genni is equally skilled behind the curtain, having supported daughters Lori and Shari by producing You're A Good Man Charlie Brown for the Music and Drama Company of Londonderry. * Gatchell and Gatchell might sound like a law firm, but no, it’s a mother and daughter team at Leddy Center in Epping NH. Elaine Gatchell produces, directs, and choreographs Leddy Center productions. Mary Gatchell splits her time between NYC and Leddy Center, teaching voice, oboe, and piano at Leddy. * Joan Storey and her daughter Alexandra Socha are appearing together early in December, in Only Love with Theatre III in Acton MA. * Finally and ubiquitously, you'll often see Moms and siblings caring for infants and toddlers, so the new Moms can fill multiple roles working on a production. OFFSTAGE 3.1 Remembering Abby Hall The PPP salutes Boy Scout Troop 264 from Mason NH, for working on the gates along several miles of trails in NH. Snowmobilers, walkers, hikers, equestrians, and XC skiers now have a safer place to enjoy the outdoors. The scouts completed this service project in memory of Abby Hall, a young woman who died tragically in a snowmobiling accident early this year. Family, friends, schoolmates, and the entire musical theatre community continue to remember Abby in many ways. This project was a superb one. (PPP) 3.2 Consider underwriting a program ad in your favorite playbill One way to show your support for the arts is to sponsor a program ad, big or small, in your favorite playbill. This is good business as well, since the several thousands who attend and perform in theatre and concerts patronize the advertisers. (PPP) 3.3 Nashua Holiday Stroll This was indeed a magical event, including actors, singers, magicians, dancers, and Santa Claus himself, entertaining young and old. Appreciative audiences contributed gifts to help those in need. Thank you organizers and Nashua merchants for sponsoring this holiday event. (PPP) 4.
