P L A Y B Y P L A Y P R E V I E W Theatre and music news for all, with a focus on young people Volume III Issue Number 1, January 4, 2001 Scroll down for the "In This Issue" section Feature Story: West Meets East -- Student Productions in Manchester West Side Story - - - - - - - - - - - West Side Story is coming to the east side of Manchester in January, produced by Central High School PTO, supported in part by the Art Builds Community (ABC!) division of the NHCF. There are only two performances – 01/11 and 01/12, 7:00 PM at the Palace Theatre on Hanover Street. Tickets are available through the Palace box office, (603) 668-5588. The prices are $11 for adults and $6 for students. The cast is composed primarily of students from Central High School, with a little help from their friends at Memorial and West High Schools. Tim Bower from the Math Department at Central High is filling the role of Doc. The exceptional dance ensemble is assembled of: Mariah Wyman, Kate Sheeran, Jessica Poulin, Leah Reynolds, Andrea Santa, Amanda Moore, Alison Lyder, Leah Flores, Christine Goodwin, Lindsey Hathorn, Samantha Conneally, and Stephanie Burnell. One goal for this production is to explore the issues of diversity presented in the themes of West Side Story. Congratulations to all for this ambitious, important project. (PPP) Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Derryfield Players are producing the rock opera Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in January. The cast includes 30 students in grades 9 through 12 and the show goes up 01/11-13. There are only three shows -- Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $9 for adults, and $6 for students and senior citizens. On Friday 01/12 the sophomore class is sponsoring a spaghetti dinner fundraiser before the show, from 5:30 to 7:00. Prices for the spaghetti dinner are $6 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. This Joseph is the full stage production. Jennifer Melkonian is directing, with musical direction by Laurel Devino, and Jim Speigel producing. Derryfield School is especially supportive of the arts, and is fortunate to house its own auditorium. The Nancy S. Boettiger Auditorium is at 1208 River Road, Manchester NH. Three Little Pigs - - - - - - - - - - - THE STORYLINE: The famous Three Little Pigs find themselves in the midst of a crisis! The younger pigs, Hooey and Pigtail, have just lost their houses to the Big Bad Wolf. These two pigs seek help from their older brother, Sooey. He decides that it is the perfect time for a vacation to sooth their frayed nerves. All three head out west to Baby Bear’s Dude Ranch. Baby Bear and his critters are all set to turn these Easterners into true "Cow-pigs!" The excitement mounts when Big Bad Wolf and his cousin show up. The Wolf has come to Texas to get away from the pigs – he is allergic to them! While at the ranch, Cuz wants to set a trap for Little Red Riding Hood. This opera is performed in English, and tells the story of a shepherd boy who is visited by three wise men on their way to find baby Jesus. You can come any time during those hours -- plan to spend about an hour. No preparation is necessary, but if you have a short prepared piece all the world will be your stage. This being Shakespeare, there are lots of parts for men. Ariel will most likely be played by a woman, the crew of the starship will be unisex, and the monsters and fairies at the masque and banquet can be of either (if any) gender. There are no parts specifically for children. Committed teens who would enjoy being part of an adult production are welcome to audition. Rehearsals begin in late February or early March. Most parts call for adults, but younger actors and singers are encouraged and invited to apply for chorus parts. The role of Patrick Dennis calls for an actor in age from 8 to 12 years, or a very young looking 13 to 14 year old. Actresses auditioning for the role of Mame should bring music, 24 to 32 bars, and be prepared to audition with a short reading from the show. All audition participants will be asked to learn a short dance routine. MORE ABOUT THE SHOW: Much of Mame’s wild, adventurous spirit is inside each of us who lives for the moment and believes that "Life is a banquet!" The scene is the 1920’s and Auntie Mame unexpectedly becomes the guardian for her 10-year-old nephew Patrick.
