P L A Y B Y P L A Y P R E V I E W Bringing you theatre and music news with a focus on young people Volume III Issue Number 2, January 19, 2001 Scroll down for the In This Issue section Feature Story: Up the Down Staircase, Londonderry High School Drama Club A Londonderry High School Drama Club production of Up the Down Staircase goes up Friday 1/26 at 7:30 PM, Saturday 1/27 at 2:00 PM and comes down after a 7:30 PM show on 1/27. These ups and downs are at the Matthew Thornton School on Mammoth Road in Londonderry, across the street from the Leach Library. Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for adults, and are available at the door. As the story goes, protagonist Sylvia Barrett begins her first year as a teacher at Calvin Coolidge High School. She encounters an environment she never expected. A staunch school administrator/disciplinarian attempts to puppet her actions, and his bureaucratic jargon begins to interfere with her teaching. Caught between the lustful advances of a co-teacher and loyalties to her troubled students, our heroine meets crisis after crisis, learning that her students are intelligent but have dark social problems. She must either give up or command their attention and help them learn. Enter a rebellious, insolent, contemptuous student. He is also the one with whom our teacher finds the most common ground. “There’s something in his rebellion that’s kind of like mine.” She proves this true when she finally gets through to her students – by breaking all the rules! Experienced film director and student Ani Pandit joins drama star and student Carly Sheehan for their dual theatrical directorial debut. Along with Drama Club Advisor Brian Courtemanche, the student directors assembled a cast of talented young actors who bring both touching drama and hilarious comedy to the stage. The cast includes Anna Mague, Derek Trenholm, Lenny Mello, Chris Barnett, Sarah Pettengill, Nikke Aubert, Yvonne Aubert, Lori Kurtzman, Brynne-Ithaca Dizack, Mary Champlain, Heather Vitale, Ashlynn Brown, Eric Woodbury, Greg Lufkin, Ben Cleek, Meg Breithaupt, Sarah McKedrick, Andrew Ralich, Katie McLaughlin, Katie Ross, Brian May, and Derrick Landano.
