Title of Show Auditions

To be staged at the Hat Box Theatre in Concord NH

[audition of show]

Friends Jeff and Hunter, two struggling writers, discover a new musical theatre festival. But with the entry deadline a mere three weeks away, they must scramble to create something new.  They discover in the process that what they find most entertaining is the process of writing itself. So they set out to do the unimaginable: write a show about writing a show...about writing a show.

Based on real-life characters and events, [title of show] follows Hunter, Jeff and their friends on their journey through the gauntlet of creative self-expression. As they write and perform their show at the festival, they learn lessons about themselves as people, friends and artists. [title of show] is, above all, a love letter to musical theater and to the joy of collaboration.

[title of show] won an OBIE award for its off-Broadway run in 2008 and a Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical in 2009.

Age range for all 4 performers could be 25-45. Ideally, the 4 characters “read” as being in their mid to late 30s. However, the most important thing is that the performers appear to be comparable in age.

Jeff: is the composer and lyricist of the show-within-a-show. While he has a great passion for creating, he worries about what others will think of his work.  Although just as witty as Hunter, he comes across as the more grounded of the two, hence he frequently keeps Hunter focused. A lifetime theater fan, Jeff once painted a glow-in-the-dark mural of Aspects of Love on his bedroom wall. Jeff is a compulsive orthographer who enjoys obscure musicals and video games.    While Jeff may come across as more level-headed and less emotional, in reality he tightly shields his feelings to avoid getting hurt. Vocal range: Baritenor (G3-B4)

Hunter:  is the book writer of [title of show]. Hunter has a sharp, sarcastic wit, and enjoys reality TV, 80s movies, and internet porn. Hunter has long dreamt of success in theater. He is an extrovert to the point of constantly seeking external validation and mass approval. His concern for how he and his work will be perceived by the public causes him to continually second-guess himself. He pressures himself to succeed, and when stressed becomes very driven and hyper-focused.  Vocal range: Baritenor (G3-B4)

Heidi: is the only working actress of the bunch and has been “in the business” since age seven. Although she can support herself and has even bowed on a Broadway stage, she feels her roles are not highlighting her full capabilities. She has yet to have the opportunity to show her full potential.      She and Jeff worked together once in a production.   Vocal range: Mezzo with belt (G3-F#5)

Susanis a former struggling actress who has “given up the whole showbiz ride” and accepted a meaningless job. She is quirky and kooky, and hangs out with Hunter & Jeff because they all share the same awkward sense of humor, and they provide her with a fleeting connection to the theater world. Her challenges have caused her to lose self-esteem.  She is the only one of the group with a steady job and income, and is engaged to be married.  Vocal range: Mezzo with belt (E3-D#5)
